When luminous natural opal from Australia has seeped with water into cracks or seams of rock (like ironstone) and is retained with the host rock, it is called BOULDER OPAL. As the surrounding stone is hard, the opal is less fragile than on its own. This piece is carved into a horse head, which is mostly a medium brown, then the opal of blue and watery greens shimmers at the center of the neck and in the head. Set in sterling silver, pendant is 2 inches across, 2-1/2 inches long including large bail.
